The Menopause & My Skin

How or why does the menopause effect skin function?

Why do I feel I have aged quicker since pre and or post menopause?

How can I help my skin before, during or after the menopause?

If you have any questions like this then read on!

Let's start with some reflection ...

Grab the violin peeps ..... So far we may have battled through pre and post pubescent difficulties, not to mention our own teenage dramas!

Perhaps then had children and noted skin changes again due to hormones.

Dating, relationships, divorce, career peaks and general day to day dramas ... followed by stress and change- the struggle is real. But that's life!

Our body's ride these waves with hormones and they keep us level (most of the time) at times we probably may have lost the plot!!

A common issue during or after pregnancy is melasma pigmentation, induced by over active hormones and melanin cells (I'll be writing about this one soon enough too)

After all of that we have even more changes to look forward to in the form of the menopause.

This is exactly as it says - our menstrual patterns pause and our body goes through some rather drastic changes, I'm focusing on skin here but there are may other systemic changes that take place.

Sadly I have noted little or no open discussion around this and women suffering in silence.

Well that needs to change!

HORMONES - these play a vital role in skin health.

Estrogen helps to stimulate collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production that helps the skin to stay plump and firm.

Progesterone stimulates the production of sebum or the oil glands in the skin. It can cause the skin to swell, and compress the look of pores. Too much of it, however, can lead to oil build up.

Can hormone imbalance cause skin problems?

With age, changes in certain hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, affect your skin as well.

Your body works with the hormones to keep a balance, but if even one hormone is off balance, you begin developing skin issues such as dryness, acne, fine lines, wrinkles and rosacea. (I can help with all of these)

Looking for menopausal skin solutions ?

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

After the menopause, your skin gets drier because oil glands aren't as active- our hormones that communicated for oil production are disrupted and you may find yourself producing less (sometimes more) and skin concerns will then tear their ugly heads.

Professional treatments like SKIN BOOSTERS, MICRONEEDLING and CHEMICAL PEELS come high up in my menopause battle hit list- couple this with active skincare available from us and you are onto a winner!

We may of course need to look at hormone replacement and work with your GP and we will be sure to plan this at your appointment with us, managing your expectations and understanding your skin and systemic status is key to optimising results.

Post menopausal jowls, skin sagging, slack skin and open pores ?

Here is why-

Studies show that women’s skin loses about 30% of its collagen during the first five years of menopause. After that, the decline is more gradual. Women lose about 2% of their collagen every year for the next 20 years.

As collagen diminishes, our skin loses it firmness and begins to sag.

Jowls appear.

Permanent lines run from the tip of the nose to the corners of the mouth.

Wrinkles that used to appear only with a smile or frown become visible all the time.

Later, the tip of the nose dips. You may see pouches under your eyes.

Large pores also are due to lack of skin firmness.

You are still gorgeous ladies but these changes may start to make you feel like less of yourself ... this is where and exactly why I want to help

I can and will help- but as I have already mentioned we will start with the foundations and help restore skin function ahead of cosmetic solutions like dermal filler.

You don't have to go this alone- and noticing these changes doesn't make you vain.

With a tailored approach and optimising home care along with professional treatments I can help with these changes you feel and see.

We are in this together ladies

REMEMBER your loved ones probably won't notice these as much as you and don't be so hard on yourself!

Lastly don't forget to hit SHARE on socials or anywhere you like to help me help more people looking for skin solutions

Thanks for reading
